Incas, Iguanas and Boobies
posted by Ian Lewis in Club Meetings
Two weeks ago we were in Panama - this week Peru, Ecuador and the Galapagos! We'll all be experts on South and Central America soon!
Here we were in the capable hands of John Sexton, our revered and esteemed Treasurer (Treasurer? Trips to South America? Hmmmm.....), starting with his views of Peru. We saw some superb images of the Peruvian cities and countryside and its people in their colourful local costumes. We learnt something of ancient Inca culture and technology such as their amazing mortar-less, stone built cities. We travelled from the coastal area to the high mountains of the Andes, visiting such iconic sites as Machu Picchu. And then, of course, there were the inevitable llamas and alpacas - just like Whitchurch really!
From Peru John took us north into Ecuador where we travelled along the Amazon in small boats, being very careful of caymen and piranhas (could seriously spoil your picture taking - meeting these intimately!). Again, superb shots of the indigenous wildlife graced our screen!
From Ecuador we headed over the Pacific to the Galapagos Islands for a Darwinian moment. Here wildlife is supreme and we at last met the iguanas and boobies (no, I'm not saying anything!). Suffice it to say that John's marvellous photographs of the birds and animals of these islands kept us all spellbound until the lights went up!
Thank you for a superb evening, John! (another idea for a summer outing?)
