In the Wake of Shackleton
posted by Ian Lewis in Club Meetings
Club member, David Pearson, had the wonderful opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Ernest Shackleton's expedition in his ship Endurance through Antarctica. David gave us a brief outline of the history of the sinking of Endurance, of Shackleton's and his crew's brave voyage in three small boats to Elephant Island and, from there, how Shackleton and five of the crew members took one of the boats another 1,300 km to South Georgia before trekking across the island to a whaling station in search of help.Amazingly, no lives were lost.
David's own voyage starting from Tierra del Fuego, Argentina was rather more luxurious and he showed us wonderful photographs of the the three types of penguins (gentoo, chinstrap and king), fur seals, elephant seals, killer whales and, of course, the icebergs.
A truly fascinating evening - many thanks David.
